Russia Reels From -60°C Cold Blast… And Munich Breaks December Snow Record

In early December, the Arctic practically spread to Russia (and Europe), see following chart:

Image: Temperature anomalies of up to -30°C below the seasonal average. Cropped at EIKE.

Extreme cold set in across most of Russia’s 17.1 million km² territory, the third year in a row that the country has suffered from severe frost in early December: -61.1°C in Delyankir on December 8, 2021 and -61°C in Oymyakon on December 12, 2022.

Lowest in 40 years

In the vast region of Yakutia (3.1 million km²), half of the weather stations there reported temperatures below -50°C on December 4. In the city of Iema, an early temperature of -58.7°C was recorded on December 5, the lowest December temperature in the city for more than 40 years.

Cropped at EIKE.

Other outstanding values include -58°C in Oymyakon and -56.1°C in Agayakan, although values below -50°C were regularly recorded.

A worsening of the frost is predicted for the rest of December. As gismeteo.ru reports, temperatures of -60°C and below would be reached in Oymyakon on December 5 and 6.

Further intensification is then expected.

The largest country in the world is suffered from an all-encompassing, record-breaking deep freeze. On Sunday, December 3, according to local meteorologist Yevgeny Tishkovets, a daily record for snowfall was set dating back to 1878, breaking the previous record set in 1980.

Munich Germany sees massive snowfall

Large parts of Europe also saw extreme cold weather and heavy snowfalls earlier this month. Munich was blanketed by over 40 cm of snow and saw the mercury plummet to -18°C.

GFS 2m temperature anomalies  (°C) December 4th. [tropicaltidbits.com].

Munich’s earliest recorded-18°C temperature

This was extremely rare for early December. In fact, this is the earliest -18°C the airport has ever recorded.

Surprisingly, there was frost practically all over Germany on Monday afternoon. The following chart shows low temperatures recorded on December 4th.

Chart: cropped at EIKE

Snowstorm grounds 800 flights

On Saturday, December 2nd, 46 cm of snow fell in Munich – a record for a December that goes back to 1933 and beats the previous monthly record of 44 cm set on December 29, 1938. As a result, almost 800 flights were canceled on Saturday alone.

Power grid teeters

The German power grid, which is recklessly geared towards renewable energies, is struggling to meet the increased demand for energy.

The government is panicking and now backtracking as ill-advised measures pushed through by corrupt/weak politicians are taking their revenge (along with an over-reliance on Russian gas).

Here, in Vermont, we just had some sleet, after some rain
During the past 40 years, NOAA measurements in summer increased 1.5 F, in winter 4.0 F

You’ll recognise the Hadley Cell – rising warm (not hot) moist air over UK and Western France = temps of 17°C (Portugal) to 10 or 11°C UK and onshore winds
Over ‘Russia’ is the resistant ridge = the descending leg at a central pressure of 1050mB (totally insane in itself)
But there is no sun to heat the ground through all that clear sky during wintertime, the stratosphere is just above Yekaterinburg’s head and the descending air is now cooling faster than it can katabatically heat.

Hapless Munich is at the crossover (haha Tipping) point where the last vestiges of warm moist air ramp skywards into the stratospheric cold and drop their water-load as snow.
Looking at that, how could ANYONE be surprised at what’s happening.
(Colours represent wind speeds, the temps are visible in the coloured circles – if the image-compressor allows)

See all around most of Europe and Asia, offshore winds are still flowing = drying out the ground in preparation for an even greater roasting next year.
i.e. Lots of ‘Temperature’ but no Energy – climate scientists in the house: Take note

I made my prediction here & now, will anyone remember it in 12 months time?

You got your record high temps through the summer but there is a catch:
A warming atmosphere represents a cooling Earth = the most basic thermodynamics possible.
How anyone could believe and convince themselves of anything else goes to the very heart of this insanity.
and that is what climate science is: Real. Actual. Madness.
The proposed and actual remedies are even worse.

and no-one this time next year will have any recollection of what I just said.
will they.

I can’t count the number of ICE car fires I have attended in the past. They are not particularly bad. 99% of them were dumped, stolen cars deliberately lit to destroy evidence. Easily extinguished by the fire service with water.

An ICE car ignited in a car park next to my neighbours car a few years ago. The car was destroyed but all my neighbours car endured was bad external scorching and melted plastic.

Smoke is the wrong colour for an EV fire, they typically have clouds of whitish-grey smoke, not black. Wasn’t there reportedly a problem with some new diesel exhaust systems where the emissions reduction unit catches fire? I believe it might have been particularly in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, but can’t remember the details.

True and I certainly wouldn’t discount the idea of an EV being caught up in the fire, given that it seems to have spread very rapidly to the 11 cars before the fire crews could even get to them, but the pictures of the fire and smoke would seem to indicate mainly ICE fires. You remember the pictures of the Felicity Ace, with the big billowing white-grey clouds of smoke? That seemed to be more typical of EV fires.

Might do, but it didn’t with the Felicity Ace fire so why would it here? My money is on one of the emissions reduction gizmo’s that had to be fitted to diesel engines – another fire hazard. Anyone might think that modern cars were being desogned to burst into flames!

Russia and other parts of Central Asia/Eastern Europe are certainly having a cold spell.

Meanwhile, globally, every single day (including today) since early July continues to set a new warmest global temperature record for that date.

It is highly likely that UAH will be adding yet another warmest monthly temperature record to its global data at the end of December.

(people might freeze to death , but what do you care)

The only exceptional warmth is in the Arctic in early winter.. where there don’t have any real measurements anyway. Odd that it isn’t affecting the sea ice, isn’t it. 😉

And the Antarctic where they have just had record snow falls.

Now.. Have you worked out how much WARMER it must have been 1000 years ago, when forests grew where now there are glaciers ?

You seem to have real difficulty even understanding the question… Why is that?

PCman999, that’s one of the statistical tricks they play on the unwary.

If a polar winter goes up from -50°C to, say, -30°C they then take those numbers and average them out across the globe. Next step is to claim we are all going to boil to death when many liveable places aren’t really changing much at all.

Even by warmunist think, the warming is going to be most pronounced in cold places, in winter, at night.

‘Global-milding’ is the true description of the most alarmist CO2 science.

Almost all the weather stations are in urban areas so with the increased solar energy the Earth has received over the last 50 years they heat up.

Still, about 4 million more people are dying from cold-related causes than heat-related causes.

The cold or cool air causes more heart attacks and strokes in the cooler months because our body’s blood vessels constrict when it is cool or cold to preserve heat, raising our blood pressure.

NATURAL warming out of the COLDEST period in 10,000 years..

THANK GOODNESS.

We know from satellite data that the only warming has come at El Nino events…

…. hence that humans have nothing to do with the warming, except in urban areas, which incidentally, comprise most of the surface data.

We know, from unadjusted data, that the 1930s/40s where a similar temperature

We know from massive amounts of studies that the current temperature is “TEPID” at most compared to the last 10,000 years (rather than the freezing cold of the LIA)

Well, that was because the temperature update wasn’t out yet. June came in as a month reflecting typical strengthening El Niño conditions, but July surprised everyone. The other data sets were showing this, but UAH wasn’t. Those other datasets report very inflated figures compared to UAH; the rate of warming in the lower troposphere is expected to be faster than that of the land surface air temperature, which may not have been clear to you. Despite several opportunities, you have not demonstrated the utility of these data.

Lord M had dozens of posts published here, over 2 separate periods (so far), talking about a “pause” in global warming based on global average temperatures; whether RSS initially or UAH, most recently. He was carried shoulder high by commenters for pointing it out.

Funny how the concept of a global average temperature wasn’t considered ‘daft’ until the pause vanished, yet again. Then, suddenly, ‘the very concept of a global average temperature’ is called into question again.

The concept of a global average temperature is a moveable feast here at WUWT: when temperatures show a pause over a couple of years they are seized upon unquestioningly; when they show a rising trend, they are dismissed as ‘daft’. It’s called having your cake and eating it.

There is no warming in the satellite data apart from at those El Nino events.

That means there is no “human warming” signature.

And you have yet to produce one skerrick of evidence for any human causation of those El Ninos. !

Your stupidity is evident here since Satellite data covers most of the ATMOSPHERE where El-Nino phases are easily recorded but ground temperature stations doesn’t employ that degree of coverage thus can’t be a “global temperature” as there are large gaps in surface coverage and doesn’t measure El-Nino phases well.

You have been corrected so many times it would by now fill the moon.

Her REAL STUPIDITY is her continued DENIAL of climate change over the last 10,000 years.

This allows her to get all in a lather and hot flush about a fraction of a degree warming from a totally natural El Nino event.

It really marks her as a completely mindless zealot with only one functional brain cell.

What does it matter that Dr. Spencer likes to do a global temperature, and that “Monck” likes to use the alarmist’s own data to point out the lie of their imminent doomsday predictions? Does “Strativarious” have to agree with everything posted on WUWT? Is there some new ‘terms and conditions’ I don’t know about? I thought WUWT was about freedom to discuss your ideas and criticise others, using actual logic and data as determinates, regardless of what the majority think.

You must have WUWT confused with one of those incontinent alarmist sites that tolerate no discussion or dessention from the party line.

Had sad that you expect that banality to be replicated here – relax and enjoy the diversity!

Mr. Nail: Is there any difference between establishing a proposition and debunking it? You think a fictional “global average temperature” is significant. Debunking that can be done by pointing out the lack of data across the globe (it can be infilled to a predetermined result, and that has been shown), or you can do your own gal, as your mate AlanJ demands, and as Mr. Spencer has done. I don’t think any of it is worth spit, there’s a very big globe out there uncovered by data (from satellites, too). It does serve to debunk your charts, even if it is just as unreliable. But you are the one trying to lie with numbers, not them. They are simply exposing the absurdity of your approach by posting their own GAL. And they aren’t trying to shut down fossil fuels, you are, so you have the burden. They only have to show that your work is wrong, not that their work shows an accurate gal.

Yes, it is a nonsense construct, with zero applicability to the real world we all live in.

I mean, what’s the point of adding the current Temps in all the Dubais and all the Moscows together and dividing them by 2 to reach a number?

If the Dubais are say all 30 and the Moscows are all -50 that would mean the world’s average temp is -10 C.

It’s bullshit.

Only warming in the whole satellite record happens at these strong NATURALLY OCCURRING El Ninos.

There is absolutely no evidence of any human caused warming in the whole 45 years of the satellite data.

Obviously it is releasing a lot more energy into the atmosphere.

Or are you DENYING that the warming in the last 6 months or so has come from the El Nino.

You still haven’t shown any evidence of any human causation.

….and you never will. !

The oceans are absorbing increasing solar radiation, with this energy being released during massive El Niños. The influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is also a plausible factor. The data from 2001 to 2015 is particularly noteworthy, revealing a cooling trend despite the concurrent presence of these two influential factors. While I doubt the true scenario is as simplistic as fitting datasets together like a monkey, even with such basic analysis, I struggle to identify the influence of CO2.

“why might that be?”

Every El Nino cycle leaves the UAH temperature trend about 0.2°C higher than the previous level – creating the obvious staircase profile.

Not what one would expect from ever-increasing CO2 emissions.

When you discount the warming effect of the energy released by major El Nino..

…there is basically NO UNDERLYING WARMING TREND.

Looking at UAH data… we see , as Bob Tisdale has shown elsewhere….

1979 – 1987 flat trend value around -0.3C anomaly

1987 medium El Nino adds about 0.1C

1988 – 1997, flat trend around value -0.2C anomaly

1998 strong El Nino adds about 0.2C

2001 – 2015, zero trend at about 0C anomaly

2015/2016 strong El Nino adds about 0.22C

2016 – 2023 (May) slight cooling, average around 0.22C anomaly

There were a couple of other El Nino, eg 2010, 2020 but these don’t seem to have caused a step change…. so have been left out.

If we remove these warming steps from the UAH data we get a graph like the one below (I’ve used the 1988-1997 period as a reference.)

As anyone can plainly see, ..

…there is NO underlying warming trend.

And still not a single “tipping point” has been reached. Not a single one of the oh so many weather/climate disasters predicted has occurred. And COP 28 is being held in a hot, arid desert land. Not a single climate refugee has shown up in Greenland or Antarctica. SLR plods along at the same old pace.

But your concern about the supposed “global temperature” brings up the question of why your still here? Why are you not heading for you safe place? I mean, the oceans are warmer than any time in the modern era and there is an on going El Nino and so conditions are ripe for any of the many disasters that have been predicted. You could at least get out there and march with the other like minded souls:

Yawn, no one here and the article is disputing a satellite based warming trend as it is reading the El-Nino effects strongly.

The article is about Cold WEATHER events some of it record breaking which is another direct contradiction to the 2002 IPPC projection of less snow and more rain/freezing rain.

Your chronic need to push what everyone already knows is BOOOOORING really boring since it is already displayed on this blogs front page showing it.

.. but it still uses the 1979-2000 period as a reference.

And 1979 just happened to be the coldest year since the 1930s/40s warm peak (now removed by scam-a-justments)

So yes, there has been some slight warming..

Less people dying of COLD is a good thing.

Longer growing seasons, is a good thing.

More time for usable shipping routes in the Arctic.. is a good thing.

In fact, I can think of zero downside to the slight warming since 1979, except the increased yapping by chicken-little-brained AGW zealots.

But it was fine when Kiev spent eight years bombing the Donbas with thousands of casualties and not a single, meaningful, western nation voiced any objections.

But God forbid Hamas attacks Israel and kills a few hundred people in one day, then the US rushes in with four carrier battle groups and provides Israel with enough ordnance to flatten Gaza entirely.

And it was just fine when Joe Biden and Boris Johnson ordered Zelensky to tear up a draft peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in March 2022, a month after hostilities began. One might think Joe wanted all evidence of his families dodgy dealings in Ukraine erased or forgotten about in the fog of war.

Also strange none of this happened under the ‘warmonger’ Trump.

Trump left Biden to clean up his Afghanistan war.

Trump also left a sharp recession for Biden to fix.

Now Trump is openly saying he will become a dictator on day one if he is reelected.

He even openly says he trusts Putin more than the US Department of Justice and quotes Hitler and Mussolini, his idols.

It’s obvious that the temperatures with blue are outliers and need adjustment!
Those are not real temperatures, but tamperatures!
They need tampering badly!

Even the higher ones need adjustments to become correct, the cold ones definitively need altering, otherwise the science of climate would not be scientific!

The obvious correct, scientific methodology is to mark as outliers every temperature measurement that under the global average, then compute the new average using only the newly, correct, scientific data obtained that way. This way we’ll ensure, comrades, to have the global temperature corrected in such a way that we’ll always get warming even if the new glaciation comes.

This way we can even mathematically prove that there is no way for the global temperature to decrease, showing those pesky deniers that they deny the undeniable! The science is certain!

later on a cold mass of this caliber could move over the top of the

So let’s see, CO2 is an existential threat to mankind and our planet. CO2 causes dangerous warming. The warming is so dangerous because it causes temperatures to rise all around the globe. Once temperatures rise so much, bitter cold sets in. CO2 causes this dangerous cold because of all the warming it is doing to our planet. Our planet is the only one we have so we must eliminate CO2 in the air because of all the warming cold it produces. Is that how the story goes?

Setting new cold records before we really get into winter after a supposed century and a half of “Anthropo Crisis Global Warming” Is a definition of falsification of this Climate Meme.
