Africa proposes global carbon taxes to fight climate change

African leaders have proposed a global carbon tax regime in a joint declaration.
The Nairobi Declaration capped the three-day Africa Climate Summit in Kenya’s capital.
The document, released on Wednesday, demanded that major polluters commit more resources to help poorer nations.
African heads of state said they will use it as the basis of their negotiating position at November’s COP28 summit.

The Nairobi Declaration urged world leaders “to rally behind the proposal for a global carbon taxation regime including a carbon tax on fossil fuel trade, maritime transport and aviation, that may also be augmented by a global financial transaction tax“.
Human rights activist Graça Machel told the BBC the declaration was “a huge step forward”.
“Africa is a player, the world cannot go without having Africa at the centre,” she said.
“Africa is not here to be helped. Africa is here to offer opportunities to offer investment, to offer solutions.“

Where are we supposed to get the capital for investment in Africa, if Africa has already taxed all our money?
This demand for handouts is shameful. It is like being approached in the street by a stumbling drunk who begs money for food. We all know exactly how that money would be spent, if we were foolish enough to agree to the absurd demand for cash.
If Africans need more money for development or weather resilience projects, they could start by arresting their corrupt Wabenzi kleptocratic rulers, and extracting a few Swiss bank account numbers from them.

BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, S Africa are responsible for 50% of all annual global emissions. Until they start paying their 50% of Africa’s climate extortion demand no other country should be required to pay anything, nor should they.
But what kind of extortion? As if the various African nations would ever give up development. Western woke-munists will sign anything and hand over blank cheques for a photo-op and virtue signaling cred, yet are pathetically oblivious that regardless of what they do the African continent’s emissions will eventually reach that of China and pass them.

Very sad but true. A lot of countries are simply using this entire fiasco as a way of getting money from the Western nations even though Chinese emissions over just a few years are greater than the entire emissions from countries such as the UK since the industrial revolution.
But, of course, they’re not demanding the money from China. It’s just about politics, nothing else. What a joke, except it isn’t funny.
I demand a slice of a new carbon tax on private jets headed to COP and those used by John Kerry and Al Gore. I’ll use the proceeds for climate policy victims and truckers.
Let’s pass a special carbon reduction landing fee on all private jets at all US airports. Maybe a minimum of $25K and a reverse per passenger fee. What I mean is the more passengers, the lower the additional fee. Maybe another $50K minus $1K per passenger.
No doubt this money would be used strictly for green projects to fight the alleged man-made climate change, and none would wind up in the private bank accounts of the dictators who run most of these countries. Nor would any of it be diverted to equip their militaries and police forces whose jobs are to keep them in power. And even if the money were supposed to be used for clean energy, who would take any action if it wound up being used for coal plants as has been the case in at least one east African country? Could the donor nations demand a refund? The best thing to do with these countries is to give them nothing and let them decide what sort of energy they want with their own money. They’re not going to have any significant effect on reducing global emissions anyway..
Well, you see, there is this email pen pal who is my friend in Nigeria and is working very hard to make sure that is the way it works. He is the third cousin, twice removed, of the wife of the assistant undersecretary of Nigeria’s finance minister and has discovered an amount of $200 million USD that is to be quietly deposited into the account of one corrupt administrative assistant of the President of Nigeria.
I can help him prevent this corruption, and thereby earn a $7 million reward of gratitude, by just sending him a certified check for $65,000 USD so he can pay the involved bank to divert the funds to him. As I emailed to him yesterday, the check is in the mail.

Then what is wrong —-the money will just be recycled back to the West. When the politician who hid his ill gotten wealth is out of office, the western governments could just freeze his account. The politician out of office is no longer useful . Then the cycles goes around— the new government promises to get rid of corruption and does what the old regime did. The western governments supports the new regime and allows him and his cronies to deposit their ill gotten wealth in the west. Money after all is just a piece of paper and often it is just data. It is the common man who work hard to earn his money that feels it has a high value because of the effort he exerts to get that money that is almost negligible under the current global financial structure.
I think that on a worldwide basis, most people recognize Africa as simply being primitive, with each ruler selfishly stealing all he can for himself. Why would a sane country get involved?
Every supposedly ‘sane’ country sends millions (if not billions) to many african countries already along with IMF/World Bank aid and direct food/medicine aid.
Call it ‘Climate Change Compensation Funds’ if you want, but don’t send a penny more until there is more oversight on these countries’ budgets etc.

Africa is late to this game. Pacific Islanders tried climate ransom (we gonna drown) a decade ago. Did not work for them then, won’t work for Africa now.
Probably plays well with local junta politics, though. Demand western climate dollars so Africa can pay off Chinese Belt and Road loans. Works for China.
Some years ago, the Pacific Islanders held an emergency meeting sitting on the Pacific ocean floor, around a table, in scuba gear, to emphasize their dire situation, claiming the island they lived on was going to disappear under the waves because of human-caused climate change and they needed money to stop the sinking.
The island is still there. The people didn’t drown, and the politicians didn’t get any climate change money.
The African Elites see an opportunity and want in on the CO2 tax money. The People they rule over won’t see a dime.

Number one only tax those whose emissions are increasing. Number two I will give you a list Asia (especially China) Oceania and India. Number three China is the number one emitter so you should start with them. Number four give us a heads up when you demand the tax from China because we all want to watch. Number five buy some Preparation H cause baby you are going to need it.

A tax in the name of climate change is nonsense, but could educate people in Africa enough to provide substantial benefits to the rest of the world.
Most of the sub-saharan african countries are led by corrupt dictators (in fact if not in law) whose sole purpose is siphoning aid funds into their family’s bank accounts by any means possible.
I highly doubt any ‘climate funds’ would improve outcomes for ordinary africans.

I had a long chat to an African doctor a while ago at an event. He’s frightened to go home to visit his elderly father, because if he returns home, there is too much danger his visit will attract the attention of local criminals, and either he or members of his family will be kidnapped for ransom.
Outside money won’t help nations suffering that level of depravity, the local people themselves have to get angry enough to round up and execute all the criminals who are making their lives a misery, then it will be possible to grow and prosper – just as the legendary sheriffs who hunted and killed the criminals who plagued the frontier towns of the American West created a peaceful and prosperous society.

IF carbon were truly the driving force behind climate change and IF we really want to reduce “carbon” emissions, a carbon tax is probably the best method for this.

IF we can avoid a self-defeating cap and trade or carbon credit nonsense and
IF we can avoid carve outs, exemptions and
IF we can trust other nations to not cheat and
IF we can trust international organizations to distribute the funds equitably and
IF we can trust the recipient nations to not just funnel funds into the pockets of the leaders and their cronies.
